Construction will begin in January on a state-of-the-art movie complex that is to open on Florida Atlantic University's Boca Raton campus in spring 2010. The new building also will include classrooms for the College of Arts and Letters.

The complex is being developed thanks to a $1,5 million grant from Portland, Ore,-based Living Room Theaters Inc., which focuses on independent films and filmmakers. An additional $1.5 million is to come from the state of Florida's Alec P. Courtelis Capital Facility Enhancement Challenge Grant Program.

The building will contain four cinemas that will be available for film studies classes by day and be open as a regular movie theater for the community in the evening. It will feature a lounge café, which will serve wine after 7 p.m.

According to the Living Room Theaters Web site, the firm's digital technology enables directors and producers to distribute their films "without the prohibitively high costs of making and shipping traditional celluloid prints."

It adds, "We are able to showcase acclaimed films and independent filmmakers, from local to international, as well as groundbreaking movies that otherwise might be screened only at festivals. We also premiere many films that have not yet had distribution in the U.S."

The partnership between Living Room Theaters and the university was announced at a Board of Trustees meeting in September. The dean of the College of Arts and Letters, Manjunath Pendakur, said “this alone will be a boost to the cultural heart of this campus.”

For the community, the Living Room Theater will offer documentaries and foreign films rarely found in the county.
