Marcus Pines, founder of the Jujitsu Club at Florida Atlantic University, holds seven gold medals in this world-class form of martial arts. He also coaches gymnastics, tumbling and two forms of martial arts in the Boca Raton area.

Pines, a senior studying engineering, decided to put together the Jujitsu Club two years ago. He wanted to assist other students, using his knowledge and experience to help their performance and technique.

Pines became actively engaged in studying the technique and history behind this martial arts form at age 9.

“My dad was never around, so I decided that if anything were to ever happen I needed to be prepared and ready to defend myself as well as my family,” Pines said.

Besides making him feel more like a man, jujitsu slowly became a passion for Pines when he studied beyond the kicks, dips and punches. He learned its history, and he would always make his mother take him to the library to get more books on his favorite martial arts masters and leaders.

“When my mom saw the passion arising in me and how skilled I was getting, she decided to find me a place to practice and enter into competitions. Unfortunately at the time, jujitsu wasn’t very popular so the places that offered it were to a minimal," Pines said. "We finally found that at the YMCA 15 minutes from my house in Boca Raton, they had a jujitsu club.

After joining that club, he began to compete locally. Eventually, he blew all the competition out of the water and started traveling to larger and more prestige competitions. He has competed in Australia, New Zealand, five European nations and all around the United States.

“It did start to get very expensive, but that’s why I always worked two jobs, because I knew how important it was to Marcus to go to every competition, and I knew that he would win,” said Linda Pines, Marcus’ mother.
