FAU students can get first-hand police experience

Florida Atlantic University students can get involved with the school's Police Department by joining the Community Service Officer program.

The program began in 1997 to provide experience for Criminal Justice majors who wanted to work for a police department. The program's objectives are to provide a safer living and working environment for the campus community and to enhance safety through foot and golf cart patrol.

“The program has so far been a big impact on our campus and the Police Department,” Community Service Officer program coordinator Pat Harris said.

The university police will use the service officers to help secure buildings at night and to escort students and guests to their cars or dorms after night classes.

“By helping in so many ways on campus, it frees up our police officers for more important problems on campus,” Harris said.

The program serves as the eyes and ears for the Police Department, and it provides the students with an education about campus safety.

All students hired as a community service officers get basic security training in different areas of law enforcement and first aid training. They help the university police with dispatch and traffic accidents on campus.

“This is an excellent program for any student thinking about a law enforcement career. It gives them a step up in training,” Harris said. “Anyone that has been in this program always feels very different about themselves once they leave. I think it gives them good communication skills and more confidence in themselves.”

All students with a grade-point average of 2.0, with no criminal record, who can pass a drug and background check can join the program.

Those interested in the program should contact Harris at paharris@fau.edu, He also is available on campus at the police station Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
