Diversity workshops offered on Boca Raton campus

Free workshops are being offered to Florida Atlantic University students so they can learn about diversity in the workplace, school environment and personal situations.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs launched the program to combat prejudices in everyday situations, teaching students how to appreciate differences in others.

The workshops focus on how to understand and relate to those of differences sexes, races, sexual preference and other individual chracteristics. By attending one workshop, a student also receives .6 continuing education units from the Office of Professional Development.

“The workshop really delves into prejudice and also teaches us why diversity is so important.” said Tariq Smith, a graduate assistant to the program. “We are always taught how boring the world would be if we were all the same. This program supports that notion.”

The one-day workshop is held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in various locations on the Boca Raton campus. Pre-registration is required because enrollment is limited to 25 students per workshop.

The program also is open to academic classes, clubs and organizations who feel the workshop would enrich their students and members.

“My mother is African American and my father is Caucasian, so I have had to deal with discrimination all my life,” said Stephanie Elwes, an alumni attendee of one of the diversity training workshops.

“The workshop really stresses the fact that diversity strengthens our society. I really wish that going to this workshop could be a requirement.”
