Medical outreach program geared toward high school sophomores

A pilot medical outreach program launched by FAU is designed to increase opportunities in the healthcare field for high school sophomores.

The Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Sciences Healthcare Outreach Program will offer students with the desire to enter the healthcare field a chance to prepare themselves for future medical studies at the college level.

“Our goal is to encourage and support high school students in their desire to enter the healthcare profession by preparing them to compete successfully at the college and post- graduate levels,” says Mark Goldstein, director of FAU’s Disaster and Emergency Training Simulation Center and the healthcare outreach program.

The pilot program has matched 20 sophomores in Boca Raton with a school mentor and student tutors as part of an intensive year-long curriculum.

During the year, students will work on special research projects that they present to their peers and family, and will attend onsite sessions at FAU to improve their skills and \education.

Students also will attend a weeklong on-campus summer session that will help them experience college life.

To qualify for the free program, students must be recommended by high school teachers or administrators.
