Hockey goalie has plenty of drive

With the sound of a final buzzer, it was all over.

Four seasons of club hockey with Florida Atlantic University culminated in one final victory for the assistant captain, vice president and goaltender Erik Bentley. Taking one last glance at the scoreboard, which read 16-2 in favor of FAU, Bentley pointed his stick to the crowd and skated off the ice.

“I’m going to miss it,” Bentley, 24, said with a somber look on his face. “I really loved playing here.”

Bentley, who lives in Margate, played hockey competitively in Connecticut before finding his niche at FAU, which plays its home hockey games at Incredible Ice in Coral Springs.

“It was a great opportunity to play with FAU hockey,” Bentley said. “It’s great for someone like me who fell through the cracks of playing at a higher level. It was awesome to be able to get my degree and play hockey at the same time.”

Bentley’s teammates were very fond of his play during his time with FAU hockey.

“He’s got some anger management issues—ask him how many sticks he’s broken,” Owls defenseman Nick Pacquee said with a laugh. “But in all seriousness, he’s one of the strongest goaltenders I’ve ever seen.”

During his time at FAU, Bentley double-majored in management and marketing. That has paved the way for his career.

“I absolutely love cars,” Bentley said, a big grin forming on his face.

“I started a company in my senior year of college called Guardian Auto Inspection. It is a mobile fleet maintenance company that sends mechanics to the people, instead of the people taking time to go to their individual shops. We also provide a comprehensive inspection of used cars, and are very affordable.”

In addition to Guardian, Bentley recently opened an auto performance shop that works with custom hot rods and other fast cars called Lashway Motorsports. He also co-founded a web site that hosts an online forum, blog and podcast about all aspects of General Motors vehicles.

With his competitive days in the past, Bentley plans to balance his love of hockey with his car career. He is the Florida Panthers summer practice goalie, and hosts private goaltending lessons. He hopes to re-join FAU hockey in a coaches’ role someday. But he plans to make his living in the car business.

“My last name is Bentley,” he said with a wink. “I was born to be in the car business.”
