Faculty and Stuff Club offers upscale dining option

Faculty and staff members have a new, upscale dining option on the Boca Raton campus.

The Faculty and Staff Club, situated on the second floor of the College of Engineering building, opened in January to give teachers and FAU employees a place to avoid the hustle and bustle of on-campus dining.

The plan for the club began when FAU contacted Chartwells — the same company that provides food to The Centre Marketplace — to take part in the new venture. It was to be different from anything FAU has seen before, said Brittany Crews, manager of the club.

"Faculty members love the ambiance and food selection. It's not unusual to see the same people here almost every day," Crews said.

This concept, however — a place made for faculty and staff members — did not begin at FAU. Many universities, such as San Diego State University and the University of Winnipeg in Canada have had similar successful operations for years.

Since its opening, the club has hosted several private events, one of them a wine tasting that advertised a "range of premium wines," as well as a "feast from a delicately selected buffet." The club also boasts a full bar that includes beer and wine.

The Faculty and Staff Dining club is not completely off-limits to students. One faculty or staff member can invite as many people as he would like to dine with him.

Political Science major Sarah Keller, for example, was invited by a professor to have lunch.

"It's different from anything else at FAU, and the food is by far the best I've had on campus yet," Keller said.

During the spring semester, faculty and staff members were able to eat at the club without paying the annual dues that will be mandatory beginning in the fall. Although the fees are still being discussed, there will be different categories from which to choose from depending on what best accommodates each member, club officials said.

The club, which is not open in the summer, offers a breakfast and lunch buffet with a menu that changes daily. The buffet also includes freshly prepared salads and a choice of vegetarian options. Breakfast is served Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and costs $4.25. Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $11.95.
